After a seven year's gap, it is with great pride that we announce the 32nd edition of the Festival Internacional de Música do Algarve- FIMA (Algarve’s International Music Festival).
The FIMA, one of the oldest Portuguese music festivals, resumes its mission to promote access to classical music through a series of 20 concerts, which is characterized by the quality and diversity of its repertoire, as well as by the excellence of its guest musicians. Under the "365 Algarve" programme, these concerts will extend throughout the Algarve region, ensuring a true democratization of culture access, and will occur over a period of more than two months - between March and May 2017.
In addition to the unavoidable involvement of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul - a musical structure of reference throughout the southern region of the country - the FIMA will count with the presence of hundreds of musicians that integrate ensembles of international calibre, such as the Academy of Ancient Music (United Kingdom), Orquestra de Extremadura (Spain), Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (Portugal), Carion Quintet (Denmark), Jerusalem Quartet (Israel) and the Quarteto de Cordas de Matosinhos (Portugal). The Orquestra Clássica do Sul will also join other artists and musical groups like the choir Lisboa Cantat, the Companhia de Dança do Algarve as well as the pianists Jean-Bernard Pommier and Constantin Sandu.
The diversity of the FIMA is not only evident in the diverse range of its invited artists, but also in the scope of its programme styles, epochs and composers, ranging from Baroque (Vivaldi, Bach and Telemann), Classicism (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven), Romanticism (Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky) to Modernism (Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich), and including great examples of the Portuguese contemporary music, such as the pieces written by with Luís Soldado, Sérgio Azevedo, Eurico Carrapatoso and Luís Carvalho (some of them in world premiere). Other events will also be included in the FIMA’s programme. For example, a multimedia-concert by hornist Laurent Rossi, and a musical dinner, where music and gastronomy will come together at the same table!
For all this, we invite you all to participate and embrace our/your Festival, since the success and the continuity of cultural activity as a way to personal elevation and demonstration of citizenship depend on our own commitment - "the culture can not be inherited, it must be won" (André Malraux).
